Come on, Jill, Pick Yourself Up by Your Bootstraps

So I got off course, way off course.  A series of events, none to large by themselves, led to my lack of self-care.  There was the sprained ankle, the vicious upper respiratory infection and the nerve wracking grand opening of our Key Hyundai of Manchester location.

I’ve learned that rather than beating myself up, I need to jump right back on the proverbial horse.  There is always a lesson to learn in all difficult times.  I learned an important lesson in self-care from my friend and business coach, Rob Berkley.  He’s been trying to teach it to me for a year but my brain and heart weren’t ready to hear it.  Last week, I spend a day with Rob and for some reason, I was ready to hear what he had to say.  It’s too lengthy to delve into here but the summary is that self-care, for woman in particular, is not selfish.  It’s necessary.  And, if you don’t do it regularly (like, daily), you will continue to suck the life out of yourself.  I know, very dramatic, but true.  Believe me, I’ve lived the “life sucked out of you, martyrdom part” for years.

Today I went to a wonderful run/walk in West Hartford.  It was crisp, sunny and beautiful.

What are you going to do today to take care of yourself?  Read?  Have dinner with a friend?  Yoga?  Time outside?  What is restorative to you?  I would love to hear about it.
